For better or for worse, social media has a huge impact on the way we travel.

So Redditoru/Amphotoxicasked, “Whattravel destinationis nothing like how its portrayed on social media?”

Here’s what people, including members of theBuzzFeed Community, said in response.

People enjoying a sunny day at a crowded beach with clear waters and a small island in the background. Several boats are anchored offshore

1.“Ibiza.

It offers way more than just the DJ scene.”

3.“Bali.

Visitors walk through a bamboo forest; several small groups of people are seen taking photos and enjoying the scenery

The island is wonderful, don’t get me wrong.

But it has become a huge Instagram destination; it’s sad.

There is a temple (Lempuyang, if my memory serves me well) with a huge photo queue.

People are visiting a traditional Balinese temple with intricate carvings and statues. Some visitors are taking photos, and others are walking around the temple grounds

4.“Chicago.

You would think it’s a warzone based on how people talk about it.

I absolutely loved it and can’t wait to go back.

Chicago River in downtown Chicago, with boats on the water and high-rise buildings, including the Trump International Hotel and Tower, lining the riverbanks

It was a very cool city.”

“The Leaning Tower of Piza.

It’s the most disappointing place I ever visited.

Tourists, including families and individuals, gather near the Leaning Tower of Pisa, some taking photos and admiring the historic landmark

You get off the train and walk down a street that is full of touristy stores.

It felt way too much like Disneyland for me.

What a waste of a day.”

A boat with tourists sails near the base of the expansive Iguazu Falls, with multiple cascading waterfalls surrounded by lush greenery in the background

“Iguazu Falls is an all-out assault on the senses.

Its a place you have to feel.

Photos and videos dont even come close.

Aerial view of a lush green landscape featuring cascading waterfalls flowing into clear blue lakes surrounded by dense vegetation at Plitvice Lakes National Park

Its so powerful.”

“Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia.

I knew itd be nice, but damn.

Aerial view of a vibrant bay dotted with numerous small islands and floating boat communities, surrounded by green-covered hills

I would love to go back.”

“Ha Long Bay in Vietnam.

It was so much better than how it’s portrayed on social media.

Scenic beach with people swimming and sunbathing near ancient ruins on a rocky coastline in Tulum, Mexico

It was so beautiful, and the wildlife was stunning.”

“Tulum, without question.

The beach has been completely built up to the point where there are no natural stretches anymore.

Hot air balloons float over a rocky landscape with a small town below during a sunrise or sunset

Most of the year, whatever beach remains is plagued with massive amounts of seaweed.

Plus, everything is wildly over-priced.

Tulum is the only place Ive ever traveled that I have vowed never to visit again.”

Clear water lake with visible rocks under the surface, surrounded by rocky shoreline, pine trees, and distant snow-capped mountains under a blue sky

“Cappadocia is stunning and is even better in person than on social media.

People take turns sitting in that same spot and get their photo taken.”

Believe it or not, the lake is even bigger and more beautiful in person.”

A stunning view of the Grand Canyon with rugged, layered rock formations under a sky dotted with fluffy clouds

“The Grand Canyon is even more magnificent.

Then, all of a sudden, the wind gets knocked out of you.”

13.“Amsterdam.

Row of historic buildings and trees reflected in a canal in Amsterdam. A bridge stretches over the canal on the right

“Livraria Lello, Porto’s famous book store.

It’s portrayed as this gorgeous place, but I went and found it to be so crowded.

It’s basically just an attraction you walk through.”

People browsing two levels of a bookstore filled with shelves of books, with some taking photos

15.“Iceland.

17.“Venice.

18.“Santorini.

A serene landscape featuring a calm pond with reflections of surrounding mountains and a cascading waterfall in the distance

“The Amalfi Coast.

Sure, the towns of Sorrento, Positano, and Amalfi have a charm.

But frankly, the views from the drive along the coast were much nicer than the towns themselves.

A man known as the Naked Cowboy wearing white boots, a cowboy hat, and underwear covered in stickers plays a guitar on a busy street in Times Square

They’re also tiny.

It was cool to see for a day trip but overrated overall.”

“The Alhambra in Granada, Spain.

A crowded scene in Saint Mark's Square, Venice, with tourists seated at a café and St. Mark's Basilica in the background

It was so crowded, especially considering how small it actually is.

In reality, though, it was beyond packed with tour groups.

Perhaps this is a good instance of how inaccurately social media can represent popular tourist destinations.”

People explore white-washed buildings and a blue-domed church in Santorini, Greece, with a cliffside view of the sea in the background

View of Positano, Italy, showcasing colorful hillside houses and buildings against a scenic mountainous backdrop with a partly cloudy sky

People walk through a historic courtyard. There is a large, ancient stone building in the background with detailed architectural features
